The Fidancs
from Saragossa, Aragon, Spain
c.1279

  • Zaragoza also called Saragossa in English, is the capital city of the Zaragoza province and of the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain.

  • From testimony taken by the Spanish Inquisition "they [the Fidanques] are baptized Christians and in said city of Hamburg had themselves circumcised and . . . continued in the synagogues of Hamburg to use the tallit and tefillin and to say the prayers of the Shema and Amidah and to perform the other ceremonies which the Jews are accustomed to perform."

  • Their descendant, Duarte RODRIGUES FIDANQUE, is recorded as living in Hamburg, Schleswig Holstein, c.1594.

Coat of Arms of Hamburg

  • Schleswig Holstein was formerly a Duchy of Denmark, lost to Germany in the war of 1864.
  • The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg; the name makes reference to Hamburg's history as a member of the medieval Hanseatic League, as a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, and also to the fact that Hamburg is a city-state and nowone of the sixteen States of Germany.
  • In the late 80s of the 16th century, the first Sephardi Jews arrived—fleeing from Portugal—and built a Portuguese Jewish community in Hamburg. In 1610, official lists of the senate counted about 100 Jewish families. Lutheran theologians preached against them, especially the "schools of Satan"—meaning the synagogues—and in 1611 the senate had to ask the Lutheran theological faculties of Jena and Frankfort for their opinions. The faculties attested the senate, that the Jews should be tolerated in the town as strangers. The safety in person were granted, however several assaults, often triggered by Christian homilies, against individual Jews took place. The community were not to be allowed to practise their religion publicly, but small private praying rooms were overlooked. Not until 1660 the first small synagogue could be build.
