The Regensburg, Haring, Haringman,
IJzerkoper & Lamon/Limoeneman Family

from Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany
c. 1690

  • The family crest above, which appropriately appears to contain three fish-hooks, is of Dutch origin. Another version found at House of Names.com shows anchors in place of fish hooks.

  • Haring is the Dutch word for herring. Some of the difficulties in tracing the family are due to transcription errors where the surname has been incorrectly recorded as Harnoz, Harding, Harring, Herring and Heron.
Obviously the original documents cannot be changed but in some cases the source web site can be convinced to change the transcriptions.

  • Regensburg was also known as Ratisbon, a Bavarian city, capital of the Upper Palatinate; formerly a free city of the German empire. Following the death of Emperor Maximilian in 1519, 500 Jews had to leave the city but in 1669 Jews were again permitted to reside there.

  • NOTES:
    1. It is possible that Alexander was the son of Jesaya:
On the marriage notice for his son, Abraham TiM2 [dtb 735- 21], his given name is shown as Alexander but on Abraham's burial record he is recorded as Abraham ben mhor"r Jesaya which indicates that he was a functioning rabbi.
    2. As Ashkenazi Jews did not generally have official surnames at this time, we cannot be absolutely certain that REGENSBURG was used as a surname but was used to identify him by his place of origin.

There are no definitive records linking the five sons and one daughter of Alexander Jesaya.
      1. The marriage notification for Abraham 'Alexander' & Bessie 'Meijer' does not record a place of origin for Abraham 'Alexander'. It would appear that the Akevoth researchers have generally assumed  that if no place of origin is shown, then the default is Amsterdam. In this instance I don't believe that this is the case and he was in fact from Regensburg as were his two assumed  brothers.
      2. Although the surname "Regensburg" does not appear in other records for Abraham 'Alexander', the inscription on the burial record of his wife, Bessie 'Meijer' reads: "widow of Abraham Jesaya Regensburg".
      3. Abraham 'Alexander' born 1733 was a witness for the marriage notification of Meyer 'Alexander' born 1738 Regensburg and they both have the same patronymic. Normally a witness's relationship to the groom or bride is indicated. In this case it is not but the implication is that they are brothers.
      4. Abraham 'Alexander was also witness for the marriage notification of Michiel 'Samson', son of his assumed  brother Samson born c.1719 Regensburg.
      5. The dates of birth for five of siblings, between 1716 and 1739, are commensurate with each other.
      6. Apart from the records of marriage notifications listed above, which indicate links to the various branches of the family, individuals were included purely on the basis of the patronymic 'Alexander' and their connection with the city of Regensburg. Solomon was included on the basis of his surname 'Haring"

    NOTES:
    • Jesaya appears to be the first, if not only member of the family, to have officially adopted the surname Haring. Haring is the Dutch word for herring so it is likely that the members of the family dealt in fish. This trait continued to the four sons of Betsy Haring (wife of Simon Isaacs) one of whom was my maternal grandfather, Alexander Isaacs, who were all fishmongers and managed fish and chip shops in London. As fryers (of fish) I occassionally joke that they had taken religious orders and were in fact friars.

    NOTES:
    1. Hartog and Rachel must have moved back and forth to England before finally settling there. They appear in the 1881 U.K. Census. Of their children, Barney was born in London in 1880, Millie and Rosa born in Amsterdam in 1887 and 1889 respectively.
    2. The story of the demise of Hartog was that he was walking in Amsterdam on a foggy night, fell into a canal and drowned.
    3. The family did not seem to have a great deal of success with water. After the death of Hartog, Rachel took her family to live in England in about 1905 when Rosa was 16 years old. The journey by boat, with a stock of fruit, ended with the boat capsizing. My grandmother, Rosa, said that she remembered coconuts floating on the water. They remained in touch for many years with the gentleman who rescued them.

Stepney Green Court, formerly Stepney Dwellings. It was built in 1896 by the 4% Industrial Dwellings Company. This Jewish company, chaired by Nathaniel, Lord Rothschild, built good quality, but low rent, accommodation for the working poor of the East End. The Rothschilds raised the money for the construction from wealthy Jewish businessmen on the understanding that the profits for the shareholders would be limited to 4%. (Source: Geograph)

Rae was previously married to Edward A. HACKETT in 1938
and to Horace D. L. LANGWORTH in 1947

There was no issue from this marriage.

    NOTES:

Ray Fuller was one of the few blonde models that (Sir William Russell) Flint employed and she appears in a number of significant works from the 1960s, including Two Models, The Balance, The Trio, Primavera and Waves. Ray began modelling for Flint when she was fourteen and the artist said of her that 'Her comments as far as pictures are concerned are invariably sensible and shrewd.' (Sir William Russell Flint RA, exhibition catalogue for the Royal Academy, 1962, p.24)

An internet reference was found (which so far does not lead anywhere) to a painting by Sir William Russell Flint at The Floren Gallery web site.
"This was the second (Sir William) Russell Flint to be published by the Adam Collection, this time depicting one of the few blonde models on the artist's book, Ray Fuller."
Several other paintings by Sir William Russell Flint including "Ray as Madame Pompadour" were found on Baron Fine Art Gallery web site.

Ray was also the model for the mermaids in the Trafalgar Square fountain, by W. McMillan (1939) and for the statue of Ariel on the Bank of England by Sir Charles Wheeler.

    See album for collected images.
