The Henriques de Mesquita Family
probably from Cordova, Andalusia, Spain
c.1663

  • Mezquita is the Spanish word for Mosque. The Mesquita of Cordoba was built on the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Janus and a Visigothic cathedral dedicated to St Vincent of Saragossa before the mosque was constructed in the 8th century. Finally, a cathedral was added inside the mosque by the Christian conquerors in the early 13th century. From the marks left by masons in the stonework, Moslems, Christians and Jews were employed in the construction. We think that the surname "de Mesquita" was taken by one such employee of the the Mezquita. Records show the name spelled as either Mezquita or Mesquita.
