The Swaab Family
from Swabia
c.1571

Coat of Arms of Swabia
  • The surname Swaab is probably derived from the family's place of origin, Swabia (Schwaben), now part of Bavaria, Germany. Variations in spelling include Zwaab, Swaap, Zwaap and possibly Swaaf and Zwaaf.
  • The Bavarian administrative region of Swabia is the eastern part of the duchy of Swabia. Already after the execution of the Swabian Duke Conradin in Naples in 1268, his uncle, the Bavarian Duke Louis inherited some of Conradin's possessions in Swabia. In 1803 with the German Mediatisation, Bavaria acquired the further East Swabian territories which were merged together with Palatinate-Neuburg under the old name Swabia which was introduced in 1837 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria.
  • The city of Augsburg is the capital of the district.

  • Notes
The name Balbirer is probably a spelling error and should be Barbirer (barber). Barbers at this time were often involved in dentistry, blood-letting and other medical practices including (disturbingly) circumcisions. The barber's red and white striped pole represents the bloody bandages of their profession.
You'll note that Joseph's daughter, Hannah, went on to better things by marrying a gentleman with the surname Doktor, presumably a physician.
