Another Mile

The working day is over. There’s the welcome of your easy chair,
You reach to touch the gentle hand that’s resting on your shoulder.
And the water in the kettle’s gone to boiling: have your coffee,
Watch the news and then it’s time to go and eat.

And you scarcely believe your eyes when you see them looking back at you
From photographs in the family album made so long ago.
Seems like forever, seems like yesterday, tomorrows keep on coming.
Time’s so swift, but still your life goes on so slow.

It’s another day, another week, another month, another year.
It doesn’t matter; life is good and you’ve got so much to do.
Another mile down the road, another song, another show,
And it’s good to have a friend along with you.

And you watch the children growing as your hair has gone to gray;
Feeling tired feels much different than it did in younger days.
And there’s no question in the answer that’s reflected by the mirror,
Lines of sadness, joy and wisdom in your gaze.

And there’s a knocking at the door from a friend who’s come to see you.
Put the kettle on and talk awhile: What’s new, how have you been?
And there’s something in the eyes of the one who’s come to call
That reminds you of that mirror on the wall.

And he tells you it’s the same old story: I go to work and pay the bills,
I try to get some time away from the worries of the day.
And I’m always glad to see you and you know I’ll come again,
Then I’ll tell you as I’m on my way:

It’s another day, another week, another month, another year.
It doesn’t matter; life is good and I’ve got so much to do.
Another mile down the road, another song, another show,
And it’s good to have a friend along with you.

Another mile down the road, another song, another show,
And it’s good to have a friend along with you.
