Till Someone Dares

Daddy drives a bus from the early morning till the dinner-time,
Dealing with the crazy drivers
And the traffic jams downtown.
He stops off for a beer and a shot or two of bourbon
On the way back home from work
Just to calm his temper down.

Mummy s done the laundry; the shopping and the sewing
Have to wait until tomorrow
Cause the dinner time is near.
She picks up after four young children,
Keeps the house all neat and warm
Her strength is in her loving heart,
Her weakness is her fear.

And he brings his anger home again
And no-one in the family can rein it in
Until it s run its course until the end,
Shouting words past thin-drawn lips
And blast into the ears of children
Breaking down the mother s spirit
Till the tears begin.
And no one dares say a word until it s over,
No one dares say a word until it s over—
No one dares.

The boy sits by himself in a room with toys and comic books.
His sister s busy with her friends,
The games that girls will play.
The sound of closing doors and footsteps falling heavy
On the stairs has brought his play to end
On the stairs has brought his play to end—
He wants to run away.

The anger s coming home again
And no one in the family can rein it in
Until it s run its course until the end,
Shouting words past thin-drawn lips
And blast into the ears of children
Breaking down a mother s spirit
Till the tears begin.
And no one dares say a word until it s over,
No one dares say a word until it s over—
No one dares.

Children all grow up and move on to their lives
Away from where they went to grammar school
While Daddy s getting old.
And sometimes in a situation
When they ve been confronted by a pressurized condition
Their reasoning stops cold.

The anger s found a home again
And now your generation
Bears the scars and makes the injuries
Your fathers gave to you
The shouting and brutality
Are tangled in your history
The tree is bent and broken
Like the twig from which it grew
Till someone dares say a word and make it over,
Someone dares say a word and make it over—
Someone dares.
