Growing

Come along and listen as I sing to you the story
Of a child who found a wonderment and never lost the hunger
As he left the age of innocence and started in his wanderings,
A weaving of experience and consequence of younger days.

(Chorus:)

And what will he be as he grows into a man?
Will he sow the seeds of kindness? Will he water them with love?
Will he stand alone while no one sees him, crying for the right?
And will he bear the pain of loneliness? Will he make it through the night?

Through a forest of deception across rivers of distraction,
Over mountains’ disillusionment in deserts of despairing,
In the herds of the advantage-takers dodging subjugation
To the plans of greater fortune-seekers, destiny of fools.

And what will he be as he grows into a man?
Will he sow the seeds of kindness? Will he water them with love?
Will he stand alone while no one sees him, crying for the right?
And will he bear the pain of loneliness? Will he make it through the night?

And the wisening becomes him in the lines etched in his features,
At the corners of his eyes and at the borders of his smile,
And he knows that when he’s looking to the far side of the mirror,
There’s a child looking back at him with wonder in his eyes ... asking:

What will you be as you grow into a man?
Will you sow the seeds of kindness? Will you water them with love?
And will you stand alone while no one sees you, crying for the right?
And will you bear the pain of loneliness? Will you make it through the night?
