Hey, What’s Goin’ On?

Hey, hey, hey, what’s goin’ on?
Hey, hey, hey, what’s goin’ on?

I see brother facing brother and a stone flies from a hand,
I see fingers on the triggers and there’s blood upon the land,
And I see the people running and a village is on fire,
And I the children crying and the flames are getting higher;
And some mother’s child lay dying and the smoke,
The smoke it fills the sky.

Hey, hey, hey, what do I hear?
Hey, hey, hey, what do I hear?

Behind the noise of traffic flecks of destruction whispered low,
And the sonic boom come crashing down upon the sidewalk show.
I hear mourning for a murdered child and angry voices cry.
I hear judgment from the neighbors, I hear no one asking why.
I hear demands and accusations; I hear thunder,
Thunder in the sky.

Hey, hey, hey, what can I say?
Hey, hey, hey, what can I say?

I can shut my lips together and say not a single word.
I can say it’s always been this way; at least that’s what I’ve heard.
I can say it’s not for me to say, somebody else should try.
I can say something’s forgotten here, there’s something gone awry.
But can I say I’m not to blame? There’s echoes,
Echoes in the sky.

Hey, hey, hey, what can I do?
Hey, hey, hey, what can I do?

I can suppose I can’t do anything; someone else should handle this,
Or propose a proposition here and hope it doesn’t miss.
I can try to be at peace myself and maybe friends with you—
If you’ve got the same idea yourself, it’d be a dream come true.
I can sing these words in hopefulness and seeing eye to eye.
I may not be too good at this, but maybe—maybe I can try.

Hey, hey, hey, what’s goin’ on?
Hey, hey, hey, what’s goin’ on?
