While There Is Time

There was time.
Was there a time
Of peace for humankind?
Where are we now, if not alone
Amid the starfield?
What have we done with such a gift,
Of life and breath on Planet Earth?
What can we give in kind return
To any angel?

And there is time.
Is there a time
Of peace to humankind?
Where are we now, if not alone
Upon the ocean?
What can we do to change a mind
Or turn the course of raging water,
Stop the wind, stay the tide
To heal the heart?

And who are you, and who am I,
If not the soul of humankind,
To stand alone, to share the peace
We give each other?—
To rise above the battlefield,
Beyond the graves of children slain,
To shine a light within the storm
While there is time?

Then come a day when I might see
The last of sabres in the wind,
A time at last when all will learn
We are each other.
And with the lion and the lamb,
With the jackal and the dove,
Shall we dwell upon the earth
And live in peace:
To shine a light within the storm
While there’s time.
